Project Description

The project concerns the eastern part of the Port, and it consists in the reconstruction of the Swedish Quay section and the road and rail system together with the above- and underground infrastructure. The purpose of the investment is to develop the potential for bulk cargo handling. The project area is located within the TEN-T network.

Project Objective

As part of the project, the following tasks are to be performed: reconstruction of the port’s quay together with redevelopment of the road and rail access, and construction of an installation collecting sewage from ships.

The object of the project is to perform construction work under the “Reconstruction of the Swedish Quay in the Port of Gdynia” project, which will consist mainly in rebuilding the western part of the quay so as to enable PANAMAX-type ships of
245 m x 34.5 m x 12.7 m with load capacity of 63000DWT to moor there.

Through activities aimed at improving bulk trans-shipment in the area of the mass terminal currently used for this purpose, the project will increase the Port of Gdynia’s competitiveness in the Baltic Sea Region. Implementation of the project will also contribute to increasing the share of combined transport in all cargo transport, as the mass terminal will be adapted so as to enable rail transportation. It will also help to improve the quality and speed of cargo handling in the port. Moreover, the project will be of great importance for increasing the share of environmentally-friendly transport in total cargo transport.

The moment the investment is completed, Gdynia will gain an extensive, modern port infrastructure for handling bulk cargo, such as fodder products or aggregates for road construction in Poland. The project will also contribute to increasing the share of environmentally-friendly sea transport in total cargo transport. Keeping the well-being of the marine environment and the port surroundings in mind, 2–3 points for collecting sewage from ships will be opened as part of the “Reconstruction of the Swedish Quay in the Port of Gdynia” project. The Port of Gdynia will thus contribute to reducing the discharge of sewage from ships into the Baltic Sea. By introducing rainwater pre-treatment systems, the project will also help to reduce the amount of pollution flowing into the port waters, which will directly contribute to the improvement of the environment.

Responding to measures limiting the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere, the project is to ensure the installation of systems that will in future enable ships to be supplied with electric power from the quay. The project will be ready to come into operation immediately after completion of the investment.

As a result of the construction of quays and manoeuvring and storage areas, the trans-shipment capacity of the Port of Gdynia will be increased. The key is to create conditions favourable for the development of trans-shipment, which will lead to increased competitiveness of Polish seaports in the Baltic Sea region. The project will also enable the creation of new sea motorway connections.
