Nearly PLN 45 milions of EU funds granted for Port Gdynia

On  12 July 2012, at the Centre for EU Transport Projects (CEUTP) in Warsaw,  representatives of Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.  and CEUTP signed an agreement  for funding from the Cohesion Fund for an extremely important  port investment.

The external funding agreement for the project “Development of port infrastructure necessary for handling Ro-Ro vessels with access by road and rail in the Port of Gdynia” (within framework of actions 7.2. Development of Maritime Transport, Priority VII of Environmentally Friendly Transportation, Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2007 – 2013), was signed by Mr. Paweł Szaciłło – Director of the Centre for EU Transport Projects and representatives of Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. (the project beneficiary): Mr. Janusz Jarosiński – President of the Managing Board and Mr. Walery Tankiewicz – Vice-President of the Managing Board. Consequently the Port of Gdynia gained subsequent EU financial means for the investment Project which is being implemented. The investment which received external funding is located in the Eastern part of Port of Gdynia,  within the area provided for expansion of cargo-handling facilities in the Ro-Ro system.

The entire cost of the project amounts to over  PLN 119 million. Out of this amount, almost PLN 53 million constitute qualified expenses. The EU funds granted pursuant to the external funding agreement, amount to PLN 45 million. The remaining investment expenses will be covered from the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. own resources. Construction works commenced in June 2009, and shall last until the end of 2013.

The project “Development of port infrastructure necessary for handling Ro-Ro vessels with access by road and rail in the Port of Gdynia” aims to develop infrastructure in order to increase the trans-shipment capabilities at the Eastern part of the port, which shall preserve the competitive position of Port of Gdynia within the Baltic Sea Region. The framework of the project includes plans for more effective  development of existing areas at port quaysides and to ensure more efficient trans-shipment of cargo transported by sea. It requires, among others, rebuilding the existing road and rail systems in the Eastern region, and demolishing some buildings. The project involves, among others: construction of about 0.8 km of roads, re-construction of a 1.2 km road section,  construction of about 0.7 km of railway lines within the transportation system of the port, and  re-construction of a 2 km section of railway lines.  The project also involved the re-construction of the Ro-Ro loading ramp, which included  the construction of the upper ramp and reconstruction of the lower ramp and mooring devices.

The port infrastructure which emerges as a result of the Project, shall be made accessible to the port users, by the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. on the basis of public access. The project implementation shall contribute to the growth of the Baltic Sea transportation, within the framework of Trans-European network (TEN-T). It shall also conduce the limitation of negative influence of transportation on the environment, owing to the increase in participation of transport modes alternative to road transport, such as sea and rail transport.
