No. POIS.03.02.00-00-0072/18

The project entitled “Expansion of the Rail Access in the Western Part of the Port of Gdynia – Redevelopment and Electrification” is a project of a strategic importance for the socio-economic development of the country and the region. It makes up a part of the public tasks.

The investment project in question is based on the expansion and modernisation of the railway lines leading to the gate of the intermodal container terminal, i.e., in particular, electrification of the railway, extension of the new sections of the railway tracks, and equipping them with an advanced traffic control system.

The planned investment is an answer to the growing dynamic of rail services. It is essential that new shunting and stabling railway tracks are built, and that the already existing trackage is modernised, including equipping it with the up-to-date railway traffic control system (SRK) and electrification. First of all, it will allow for the reduction of the usage of diesel locomotives which will have a significantly positive influence on the impact of the transport on the natural environment. Furthermore, it will allow to increase the potential number of the train compositions serviced daily at the intermodal terminal.

Trackage will be managed by the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. and available for all interested rail carriers.

In general, the project will contribute to the intensification of the rail and intermodal transport in the Port of Gdynia. Development of the rail transport is one of the priorities in both Polish and European Union strategic studies. This investment is indirectly connected with both the TEN-T network and the short sea shipping. It will be compatible with other investments led by the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.

Project objective

The purpose of the project entitled “Expansion of the Rail Access in the Western Part of the Port of Gdynia – Redevelopment and Electrification” is to increase the rail traffic and its safety, as well as, to significantly decrease the exhaust emission to the environment. As a result, this means of transport will become more competitive in the cargo service of the port (reduced time of service). Redevelopment of the port trackage, electrification, and introduction of the system SRK, along with the railway infrastructure PKP PLK redeveloped according to the task “Improvement of the Rail Access to the Maritime Port of Gdynia” will ensure the increase in efficiency and complex rail access to the western part of the Port of Gdynia.

Technical information

Redeveloped track layout will be located in the western part of the Port of Gdynia.

Investment entails the redevelopment and electrification of the rail system in the western part of the Port of Gdynia (from EC III to the BCT gate) at a length of approx. 2.59 km (including the redevelopment of the railway tracks at the distance of approx. 2.22 km). Additionally, electrification will include the section of the railway not undergoing the redevelopment, approx. 0.4 km.

The industrial spur of the Intermodal Container Terminal is an active siding. It branches off from the rail turnout number 572 at the 6.437 km of the railway line number 228 Rumia-Gdynia Port Oksywie that belongs to the management of the PKP Polish Railway Lines S.A. in Gdynia. Siding consists of the subsidiary rail number 38, the outside rails (number 32-37), and the rails on the container platform (number 848-852). Siding is not electrified. Rail turnouts are operated manually. Neighbouring plots are on one side industrial lands and on another there are lands belonging to the PKP with the railway line number 228 leading to Oksywie.

The primary tasks of the project:

  • Redevelopment of the permanent way with rail turnouts: it is planned that the standard permanent way will be made of rails fixed on concrete sleepers, whereas the permanent way for steel rail arches with the radius of R<300 m and for switch points is designed with hard timber sleepers on crushed stone rail ballast;
  • Construction of an additional (seventh) rail track number 31 on the outside rails;
  • Construction of two new rail turnouts on the reception-departure sidings number 1006 and 1016;
  • Relocation of the already existing simple rail turnouts;
  • Replacement of the permanent way on the rail number 38 of the siding with a new one (junction with a private road);
  • Paving with concrete slabs of the section of the rail number 37 (at the length of approx. 200m +/- 15%), along with the area between the railway tracks and Promowa Street;
  • Construction of the overhead line above all the railway tracks included in the project;
  • Implementation of the railway traffic control system (SRK);
  • Construction of the fence surrounding the tracks and a railway gate; the gate will be operated by the SRK system;
  • Modernisation of the railway track drainage; the place where the rainwater drainage system directs the collected water will remain unchanged;
  • Modernisation of the electrical grid, including: track lightening, turnout lightening, and road lightening (application of energy-efficient light fittings), as well as, electric heating of the automatically controlled turnouts dependent on the atmospheric conditions measured with weather sensors;
  • Adaptation of the facilities located in the existing building for the rail traffic control rooms (control room operator workplace) with the necessary systems and equipment;
  • Installation of the video surveillance (CCTV) in order to improve the safety of the rail traffic.
