PORT OF GDYNIA HAS BEEN BUILDING THE FUTURE OF THE CITY, BUSINESS AND ECONOMY FOR 100 YEARS

This Friday, 14 October 2022, the Maritime Economy Forum begins at the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park in Gdynia, bringing together entrepreneurs and maritime professionals every year to discuss current issues, debate the future and challenges.

The year 2022 is a special year, as it is a jubilee year. The 100th anniversary of the Port of Gdynia is an opportunity to celebrate, but also to discuss both the history and the vision for the future.

“The creation of the Port of Gdynia is inextricably linked to the creation of the city of Gdynia, which indicates the importance the port has for the local community, but also for the economy of the whole country. It is worth noting the visionary work of the port’s founders, thanks to whom it has operated and developed over the last 100 years. Handling technologies, as well as the demand for cargo groups, have changed over the years, but it was through proper design that they could be properly integrated into the architecture of the port. It can be said that 100 years ago was the beginning of a great history of port development, which we are still observing today, and the increased investment effort being made today is a response to the needs of the maritime transport industry in the decades to come,” says Jacek Sadaj, President of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.

“The scale and dynamics of the phenomena surrounding us in the economic, political and climatic spheres require an ongoing discussion about solutions to minimise their negative impact on the functioning of the maritime industry,” he adds.

(President Jacek Sadaj, will participate in Panel No. 3: MARITIME PORTS /Room D/ “Development strategies of Polish seaports”.)

An unquestionable asset of the Forum is its participants, addressing topical issues and ensuring a high level of discussion. The one-day event will be attended by approximately 500 guests who will have the opportunity to hear from 30 speakers participating in five thematic panels: 1) Maritime Technologies, 2) Maritime Ports, 3) Maritime Logistics, 4) Marine Industries, and 5) Renewable Energy.

“For the Port of Gdynia, this is a very important event – because it’s in Gdynia, because it’s an opportunity to extend the centenary celebrations of the Port of Gdynia. There are such changes in the industry that we need to discuss it and look for solutions,” says Maciej Bąk, vice-president of the Port of Gdynia Authority.

(Vice President Maciej Bąk will participate in Panel No. 2: MARITIME LOGISTICS /Room F/H/ “New strategic challenges in the face of a turbulent global environment”.)

During the Forum, the topic of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, affecting not only the situation of Polish ports but the entire global maritime sector, will be discussed. Dr. Małgorzata Bonikowska, President of the Centre for International Relations, will discuss the contemporary geopolitical situation and its implications for our region. Meanwhile, the economic situation will be analysed by Jacek Wiśniewski, long-time chief economist of Raiffeisen Bank Poland. Also confirmed to attend the Forum are Marisa Farrugia, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta and Ole Toft, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The Port of Gdynia has always built the future of business, the economy and the inhabitants. The port has always created the beautiful city of Gdynia and given jobs to people, and now, with the development of civilisation, another element of responsibility for the region is to support local communities and employees, through numerous initiatives, both cultural and sporting.

The topic of Social Responsibility and strategies for sustainable development among selected organisations related to the boating industry will be raised by representatives of the Port of Gdynia and participants in a panel chaired by Tomasz Chamera, President of the Polish Sailing Association, Vice-President of World Sailing.

For the Port of Gdynia, as the home port of many Polish sailing ships, the sailing season is extremely important. It officially began on 2 May, with the ceremonial raising of the white and red flag at the Marina Yacht Park in Gdynia. The Port of Gdynia is a partner of exceptional and spectacular events, including the 6th St. John’s Day Sailing Parade and the 23rd edition of the Gdynia Sailing Days festival, one of the most important sailing events in the Baltic Sea. Gdynia Sailing Days builds Gdynia’s sailing brand and shapes the maritime identity of a city made of sea and dreams. And when it comes to Gdynia’s maritime identity, there can be no other association than Port Gdynia.

“It was with the construction of the port that the beautiful history of Gdynia began and that is why, as a sailing community, we are proud to partner with the Port of Gdynia for such an important event. Since time immemorial, the port – a full four years older than the city – has been the essence and pride of Gdynia and an opportunity for its further development. Gdynia’s tradition and future prospects are linked to the port. The whole sailing community, thanking for the partnership so far, joins in wishing the Port of Gdynia another 100 years of sustainable development, abounding in successive economic successes,” said Piotr Myszka, sailor, Olympian in the RS:X windsurfing class, multiple medallist in world and European championships.

This year we decided to integrate the maritime economy industry also around sailing. At the beginning of September, the Port of Gdynia organised the 1st Tadeusz Wenda Maritime Economy Regatta. We were honoured with the presence of the engineer’s granddaughter, Ms Hanna Uszyńska-Wenda.

“I think that the 1st Tadeusz Wenda Maritime Economy Regatta is a great event. My heart rejoices immensely, because every event connected with Gdynia, the Port of Gdynia and my grandfather engineer Tadeusz Wenda is a great emotion, pride and responsibility for me,” says Ms Hanna Uszyńska-Wenda.

“Regatta, sailing, someone might ask what this engineer had to do with it. Well, he did! For in 1928 Tadeusz Wenda was one of the founders of the GRYF yacht club. One of the first in Poland, it seems. So it wasn’t only matters related to the construction of the harbour, to which, as we know, he was devoted, but also sport,” adds Hanna.

The Port is the people! The fascinating history of the Port of Gdynia, thanks to which the city of Gdynia came into being, shows that behind every great project there are people, their passions and their dreams. May the builders of Port Gdynia be an inspiration to all of us to continue to responsibly create the future of the port and the city, and a proof that nothing is impossible.
