The Port of Gdynia has inaugurated one of its key investments for the coming years – the construction of a modern intermodal terminal in the Logistics Center. The project, worth nearly PLN 75 million and co-founded by the European Union, will increase the port’s competitiveness, relieve the Tri-City’s road network and strengthen infrastructure of strategic importance for the security of Poland and NATO’s eastern flank.

New dimension of cargo hanlding

The intermodal terminal will enable efficient handling of containers and other cargo between sea, rail and road transport. In practice, this means shorter delivery times, greater operational efficiency and reduced emissions and traffic congestion in the region.

The scope of the investment includes the construction of 2.73 km of new railway tracks, 30,000 m² of manoeuvring areas and a stationary cargo handling ramp adapted to handle heavy civilian and military vehicles.

‘By building an intermodal terminal, we are investing not only in logistics, but also in security. This infrastructure increases the strategic importance of Gdynia on the map of Europe. The terminal will strengthen the infrastructure resilience of Poland and the entire region,’ emphasised Piotr Gorzeński, President of the Management Board of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.

Joint effort for the development of the region

The official inauguration ceremony, which took place on 6 October at the Authority’s headquarters and on the investment site, was attended by representatives of the government and local authorities, EU institutions and the contractor, NDI.

‘This is an investment that strengthens Pomerania and opens up our connections with the whole of Europe. The intermodal terminal in Gdynia is proof that when the region and the state work together, we can implement projects of European significance,’ said Mieczysław Struk, the Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The project is co-founded by the EU under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The co-founding amounts to approximately PLN 35 million, which is half of the total investment value.

‘This project is an example of how efficiently we convert EU funds into real investments. Poland ranks second in the EU in terms of the value of support from the Connecting Europe Facility in the area of military mobility – over EUR 223 million,’ emphasised Jacek Karnowski, Deputy Minister of Development Funds and Regional Policy.

Dual-use infrastructure

The terminal will be dual-use, i.e. civil and military infrastructure. Thanks to specialised ramp and tracks adapted to handle military equipment, it fits in with the EU’s Military Mobility programme.

‘This is a key investment from the point of view of the security and resilience of Poland and the entire region. For years, this concept remained on paper – today it is becoming a reality,’ added Emil Rojek, Deputy Governor of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Schedule and further actions

The construction of the terminal will last until the second half of 2026. Once completed, the Port of Gdynia will gain modern intermodal facilities that will support the development of sustainable transport and increase the port’s importance in the trans-European logistics network, especially on the Baltic-Adriatic route.

‘The construction of the intermodal terminal is another step in the development of the port, which will become even more competitive and efficient,’ said Przemysław Młynarczyk from the NDI Group. ‘All work is proceeding according to plan.’
