Grant Agreement for the Project 101158165 — 23-PL-TM-Intermodal Gdynia “Construction of an intermodal terminal in the Logistics Center of the Port of Gdynia” co-funded under Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

Project description

The subject of the project is the construction of an intermodal terminal in the existing Logistics Center of the core network seaport – Port of Gdynia – located on the Baltic – Adriatic Core Network Corridor (CNC).

The terminal will increase the sea-to-rail handling of goods, featuring the first stationary vehicle ramp in the Port of Gdynia. Furthermore, it will enable wider use of existing storage yards, increasing the share of intermodal transport in the Port of Gdynia.

The intermodal rail terminal will consist of: 2 tracks with a length of approximately 750 m ending with a stationary loading vehicle ramp, an access track and a link track, a concrete-paved manoeuvring and holding yard, entry road, a railway and road system and a retention tank.

The project includes the use of innovative technologies as part of the railway traffic control system, such as electric heating of turnouts on the basis of atmospheric conditions measured by weather transducers controlled automatically by the railway traffic control system.

The new terminal addresses the dual-use requirements, as defined in the Regulation 2021/1328, under railways (railhead operations, max train length, loading gauge) and multimodal equipment handling (ramp axle loading).

Project starting date: 21 September 2023

Project end date: 20 September 2026

Project duration: 36 months

Project objective

The objective of the project is to adapt the infrastructure of the Port of Gdynia to the requirements of dual, civil-military use, and thus increase the share of intermodal transport through the construction of a new intermodal railway terminal in the Logistics Center.

The project will also contribute to increasing cross-border mobility of EU/NATO armed forces and will eliminate the bottleneck in the infrastructure of the Port of Gdynia in the Baltic Sea – Adriatic Sea corridor of the TEN-T network.
