On 5 April this year, at the seat of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A., an informative opening conference for the project “Construction of a public ferry terminal in the Port of Gdynia” took place (project no. POIS.03.02.00-00-0015/17), co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund resources under the Infrastructure and Environment Programme in the new perspective 2014 – 2020, attended among others by representatives of shipowners, national and local administration and the main contractor – Korporacja Budowlana DORACO sp. z o.o.

The project includes the construction of a new public ferry terminal in the Port of Gdynia together with the accompanying infrastructure, enabling efficient cargo and passenger service and improving transport accessibility of the port. The project is implemented on the basis of EU funds and own resources of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. The EU funding obtained for its implementation is over 116 million PLN. The investment is located directly at the internal entrance to the Port of Gdynia, at the Polskie and Fińskie Quays. The construction works are planned to be completed in the middle of 2021 and the project will be settled by the end of 2021.

The parameters and area of the currently operating ferry terminal at the Helskie Quay II do not allow for handling larger ships as well as increasing the number of operators. The existing terminal also has no access to railroad infrastructure and the number of parking spaces is limited. The increased demand for ferry services has contributed to the need to find a suitable new location for the ferry terminal. Thanks to the new location of the terminal in close proximity to the entrance/exit of the port, the time of sailing and navigation of vessels in the port will be shortened. The the new terminal will be more versatile, as ferries with different technical parameters wil be able to call at it, it will be possible to handle large ferries up to about 240 m and there will be a connection to the international communication system. The new public ferry terminal will provide ferry transport services in a two-level system on one ferry station and passenger traffic services through a gallery connecting the terminal building with the ferry station. Direct access to the intermodal rail terminal will enable handling of intermodal units in the rail terminal. The new ferry terminal will be connected to the international transport system through Polska and Janka Wiśniewskiego Streets, Kwiatkowskiego Route, Tricity Ring Road and A1 Motorway.
