The Port of Gdynia is the safest and most important passenger port in Poland, which for many years has been hosting the largest cruise ships sailing on the Baltic Sea.
This year's season of passenger ships at the Port of Gdynia will start on 9 May, and will last until 19 October 2018. The Port of Gdynia will host 54 large cruise ships. The average ship length this season is 255 m. What's more, as many as 49 vessels calling at the Port of Gdynia this season will be over 200 m long. "Passenger cruisers at the Port of Gdynia are a long tradition that gives special prestige to the Port of Gdynia in comparison with the ports of the Baltic Sea", stressed Adam Meller, the President of Port of Gdynia Authority SA. "The Port of Gdynia is a key Polish passenger port, and I hope that the number of passenger arrivals to our port will increase from year to year", he added. The presence of passenger ships in the Port of Gdynia is the best promotion of the Pomerania Region as well as the port and the city.
The season will start with a visit of the MSC Orchestra, which is 294 m long and 32 m wide. The vessel can carry over 3,000 passengers, with a crew of 987 people. The godmother of the ship is Sophia Loren, a symbol of Italian elegance; the music for the MSC Orchestra christening ceremony was composed by Ennio Morricone. The sailing jewel in the crown of this year's cruise season at the Port of Gdynia will be the MV Mein Schiff 1, which is the largest vessel - 316 m long - that will come to the French Quay.
Throughout the 2018 season, MV Mein Schiff 1 will visit the port in Gdynia six times - first, on its maiden voyage on 21 May. The ship can take almost 2,900 passengers on board, with a crew of 1000 people. It was built in 2018 in the Finnish shipyard in Turku for EUR 500 million and is equipped with an energy-saving and eco-friendly engine, thanks to which emissions of harmful substances have been reduced by 30 percent compared to other ships of similar size. Another big event will be the arrival of the famous MV Queen Elizabeth on 21 June - the youngest passenger vessel of the legendary Cunard line, launched in 2010, whose godmother is the British monarch Elizabeth II. MV Queen Elizabeth, which is 294 m long and 32 m wide, can take on board almost 2,100 passengers, looked after by a 940-person crew.
Let us keep in mind that a significant event of the last year’s passenger ship season at the Port of Gdynia was the visit of one of the world’s largest cruise ships – MS Norwegian Getaway – a 325.7 meter long vessel, which brought almost four thousand passengers on 23 June. 41 passenger vessels with almost 90,000 passengers on board entered the Port of Gdynia between May and September 2017.
