The agreement has been signed for the implementation of the task “Reconstruction of the internal sea areas of the Port of Gdynia to a depth of 16 m”. This is the final stage of multi-year investments carried out by the Port of Gdynia Authority as part of the investment task “Deepening of the fairway and internal sea areas of the Port of Gdynia – stages 1 and 3 and the redevelopment of quays in the Port of Gdynia – stages 2 and 3”. This investment, which is key for the further development of the port, is another such huge undertaking implemented by ZMPG S.A. recently.
– The basic objective of implementing this project is to enable the largest ships in the Baltic Sea to call at the port. The implementation of the project will contribute to a fuller use of the port’s potential, an increase in the level of transshipment in the terminals, and thus increase the competitiveness of the Port of Gdynia in the Baltic Sea region – says Jacek Sadaj, President of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.
In recent years, the Norweskie, Słowackie and Włoaskie Quays have been rebuilt, the Północna Pilot Groyne has been shortened, and the Reconstruction of the Pilotowe Groyne and the Portowe Quay is currently underway. The above projects were aimed at enabling the execution of key construction works for the development of the Port, consisting in the execution of dredging works along the entire length of the Port Canal, from the Wejście Główne to the Puckie Quay, to the target depth of -16.0 m. Basins III, IV and V will also be deepened to the necessary extent. The works will also include the execution of bottom reinforcements at the Szwedzkie, Bułgarskie, Puckie Quays and above the fuel pipelines located in the bottom in the Awanport area, and the relocation of telecommunications cables running under the bottom of the Port Canal to the Navy area. As part of the works, approx. 4 million m3 of dredged material will be exhausted and deposited on the sea dump. The amount of excavated material would allow for filling 1,600 full-size Olympic swimming pools.
The contractor – the Belgian company JanDeNul – is obliged to complete the subject of the contract within 16 months from the date of handover of the construction site.
– Today, an agreement was signed between the Port Gdynia Authority S.A. and Jan De Nul for dredging, filling and related works in the Port of Gdynia. We are looking forward to the upcoming cooperation with the Port of Gdynia, we will make every effort to ensure that this large and important maritime infrastructure project is successful – comments Kurt Levrau – Area Manager Europe.
The implementation of the task is aimed at enabling the handling of much larger vessels up to 400 m in length, which will significantly contribute to increasing transshipment in the Port of Gdynia, both in terms of containers, bulk goods and general cargo.
The task is carried out with support from European Union funds in the amount of PLN 273 million, under the Grant Agreement No. POIS.03.02.00-00-0070/18-00 dated 28 December 2018.
