Project Objectives

Main objective

The main objective of the project is to increase the size of allowable draught for vessels and improvement of navigational conditions in the Port of Gdynia.

Specific objectives

Port of Gdynia operates sea container, ro-ro and ferry connections to the European network of motorways, expressways and railway routes. Reconstruction of the port channel through the deepening to the target depth of -13.5 meters will allow for the operation of vessels with a total draught of about 13 meters.

After the completion of the investment in terms of the reconstruction of the Ostroga Pilotowa (Pilot Groyne) quay, the inner entrance width at the maximum depth of -13.5 m will amount to 98 meters, allowing for safe manoeuvre operation of wider vessels.

Deepening of the bottom along quays: the Dutch, Helskie, Norwegian, French and Slovak (formerly Yugoslavian) will allow for handling of deeper draught vessels in the future. Current depths at the above mentioned quays prevents operation of much larger vessels, more and more often notified on terminals operating there. The vessels that happened to be contracted so far used to enter the port partially loaded. The deepening will create the possibility of a better use of the tonnage of vessels, and thus it will favour to the development of maritime shipping.

As a result of the investment, 6 port quays will be modernised (reinforcement of the bottom along the quays: Dutch, Belgian, French, Norwegian, Slovak, Helskie I) following the preservation of coastal structure by strengthening the bottom of basins, which will allow for safe functioning of structure and provide greater stability of quays. Reinforcing the bottom along the quays, the current depth of which is being increased, shall reduce the risk of hollowing the structure of the quays.

As a result of the investment the port turning basins will be deepened. Diameters of two turning basins will also be enlarged. Deepening and widening of the turning basins will guarantee the greater safety during the performance of maneuvers and will allow for the operation of vessels of larger parameters than now, i.e. with a draught of up to -13m and the length of about 200m in the Turnbasin No. 2, and the length of about 250m in the Turnbasin No. 3.
