Last month the Baltic Container Terminal in Gdynia reported the highest share of containers transhipped on rail in its history - as much as 43.7% of containers were carried by rail. In January, BCT handled a total of 30 475 TEUs. The company is a leader among the marine container terminals as far as the intermodal transport is concerned.
"BCT attaches a lot of significance to rail services. We put a lot of effort into organization of those activities and we also plan significant investments in order to improve reliability and throughput of our railway terminal. The demand for the carriage of goods by rail is growing quite rapidly - which is a more punctual way to transport large consignments of goods, definitely ecological and finally in line with our European needs expressed in the European Union Transport White Paper"- said Krzysztof Szymborski, President of BCT.
BCT Gdynia company is a leader among the Polish terminals in terms of the share of railways in container handling. The implementation of the planned investments, which will begin in the coming months, will significantly increase the handling capacity with the use of railway at BCT.
"More than 153 million PLN will spent on the development of intermodal transport by 2015. As much as 35% of this amount will come from EU funds as part of the CUPT competition adjudicated last year"- adds Mr. Szymborski, the President.
As part of the modernization of the railway terminal, we plan to purchase new rail gantry cranes. The Port of Gdynia Authority SA will also expand the railway tracks to three lines of 650m, so that trains will be able to enter the terminal without the need to detach carriages. The investment will be realized in the period from 2012 to 2015 and, along with other investments in cargo handling equipment, terminal facilities and IT systems is supposed to greatly increase the handling capacity of BCT.
