600-ton barge for disposal of snow

The first 600-ton barge for disposal of snow, which was produced by the  Vistal Gdynia capital group, will go to Oslo, Norway. The unit is designed to help in getting rid of the snow while maintaining stringent environmental standards.

The vessel for melting snow is the NCC's idea implemented by the  Vistal Gdynia following the order of the city of Oslo. Polish plants had less than five months to design and construct a prototype barge.

The vessel weighing about 600 tons, which was built by Vistal on the Indian Quay of the Port of Gdynia, was dispatched to the Norwegian capital on Saturday, 12.11.2011. The method of displacement of the barge as well as the entire complicated loading on the huge, scuttling pontoon was developed by the Port Consultants, a company from Gdynia specializing in this type of transshipment.

Before loading, the pontoon with dimensions 92.00 x 31.50 x 6.70 m, was filled with nine thousand tons of water, so that its deck reached the level of the quay. Then the displacement of the barge onto a pontoon with the use of hydraulic method on special bridge beams begun.

Tests of the prototype barge for melting snow are to be completed in early January next year. If the vessel completes them successfully, Vistal Gdynia may expect more orders from Scandinavia.
