Modern storage areas at the Port of Gdynia

In connection with the accomplishment of construction of the high storage warehouse at the back facilities of two container terminals in Gdynia on 14 December this year the Port of Gdynia Authority officially commissioned the warehouse.  Ipso facto, the offer of modern warehouse areas at the port site was broadened up.  This is not, however, the last word of the Port of Gdynia Authorities regarding the matter.

Apart from the noticeable consequences of the last year's world economic crisis - affecting the ports' business as well - the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. decided to carry out further investments.  Opening new ways of business opportunities through investments will allow the effective exploitation of economic boom which is visible to the naked eye. It is expected that this year's total trans-shipments at the Port of Gdynia will increase in comparison to the previous year's turnover by 12 percent - including the very satisfying 30% rise in the container turnover.
The main statutory obligation of the Port Authority is the care for the condition and development of the port infrastructure. The Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. has been investing significant amounts of money for a number of years in that type of activities. Apart from own resources - which largely constitute the source of funding for investments - the EU funds also significantly support the investment activities. Obtaining funds for the development of infrastructure from the Cohesion Fund means that the own resources of PGA S.A. saved in this way can be spent on projects that would  not aspire for such funding. The most important of them are the new storage facilities. Considering the fact that the significant part of revenues PGA S.A. constitute the revenues from the provided rental services (around 48% - according to the predictions for 2010), the Port Authority decided to invest significant amounts of resources in the creation of modern high storage warehouse space.

Building a high-storage warehouse at the back facilities of the two container terminals in Gdynia has been recently accomplished as an investment in the storage area - at the 69 Kontenerowa street in Gdynia. The warehouse was officially commissioned during the celebration that took place today. The area of around 14 000 m2 was allocated for the construction of the warehouse and the necessary infrastructure. The one-floor, two-compartment building made of reinforced concrete was built in a short time. The warehouse will be used for storage of general cargo, highly processed goods in packages, with the exception of dangerous goods. The users will be able to carry out the logistic services related to storage, reception, completion and issuing of goods. The warehouse is dedicated to two users with the possibility to operate five handling posts for each user and the possibility to use the exit ramps which enable the loading equipment to enter the level of the outer manoeuvre area. The warehouse will be handling approximately 40 trucks per day. The facility has very good road connection from Kontenerowa street to Estakada Kwiatkowskiego, Obwodnica Trójmiasta (Tricity Beltway) and the A1 Motorway.

The numerical data relating to the warehouse at 69 Kontenerowa street in Gdynia:
usable storage area 2 x 3,993.7 m2 =  7,987.40 m2
external manoeuvre area and parking lot about 3,500.00 m2
the storage height on racks (pallets) 10.5 m
office space 2 x 33.05 m2 = 66.10 m2
social space 2 x 58.45 m2 = 116.90 m2
internal communication area 2 x 73.88 m2 = 147.76 m2
technical space 28.12 m2
central heated gross cubature 110,846.35 m3
level of the ground floor foundation 8.85 m. above the sea level

  • The warehouse is fitted out with the following installations:
  • sanitary - central heating, hot utility water, cold utility water, sanitary sewage, hydrant internal installation, mechanical ventilation,
  • air conditioning in the offices,
  • electrical and power, lighting and sockets, emergency lighting,
  • protective installations, overvoltage and lightning protection,
  • telecommunication,
  • CCTV system,
  • fire alarm system with smoke exhaust hatches.

The warehouse is divided into two separate compartments with the 24 cm thick fire wall. This modern facility is located in the close vicinity of the investment of Rolls-Royce Marine Poland Sp. z o. o., i.e. the service and repair facility, dedicated to servicing marine propulsion systems. Its commissioning is planned for next year.

The newly built high-storage warehouse is not the only investment planned by the Port's Authority that is to enrich the offer with further warehouse facilities for lease. Another high-storage warehouse is to be built in the period 2012-2013. It will be intended for storage of highly processed general cargo in packaging. This time the facility will be constructed in Western Port in Gdynia at 27 Wiśniewskiego Street. The future users will be able to carry out the logistic services related to storage, reception, completion and issuing of goods. The warehouse will be dedicated to several users with the possibility to operate 3 to 9 handling positions for each user and the possibility to use the exit ramps which enable the loading equipment to enter the level of the outer manoeuvre area. Depending on the number of users of the facility, the warehouse will be able to handle even 200 trucks per day, approximately. The facility will have as convenient road connections as the warehouse at 60 Kontenerowa Street.
