THE "GDYNIA - KARLSKRONA MOTORWAY OF THE SEA"
According to the transport policy adopted by the European Commission, the important European maritime transport routes, including the ones in the Baltic Sea region - can be regarded as the motorways of the sea. Motorway of the sea should help to eliminate the so called „bottlenecks" in the EU transport corridors and promote trade by sea in order to reduce road transport, shorten the travel time and optimize transport costs while reducing environmental pollution.
The "Gdynia - Karlskrona Motorway of the sea" project focuses on the investments in infrastructure and logistics operations necessary to handle the increasing trade exchange between Sweden, Poland and other European countries and particularly the ferry connection from Gdynia to Karlskrona.
In 2009, the Port of Gdynia Authority SA and the Swedish partners have submitted the application for the project "Baltic-Link: Gdynia-Karlskrona Motorways of the Sea" within the framework of the TEN-T Multi Annual Call 2009 Programme. The basic aim of the project is to improve the quality of transport by sea on an already existing connection between Gdynia and Karlskrona and improve rail and port infrastructure in both ports. In the future, the new solutions are to improve the level of efficient service of the transport of cargo between Scandinavia and the Adriatic Region, the volume of which - according to forecasts – is going to increase.
After receiving a positive opinion and approval of the project by the European Commission the Swedish partners set about negotiating the contract in details in January 2010. The agreement for the implementation of the Swedish part of the project was signed on 12.08.2010 and the official inauguration of the project took place on 03.12.2010 in Alvesta in Sweden.
The Polish side did not apply for financing of its investment within the TEN-T Programme. The tasks as set forth in the project will be carried out as part of the second stage of the investment titled “The infrastructure of road and rail access to the eastern part of the Port of Gdynia”, co-financed by the Cohesion Fund.
The projected cost of the investment in Sweden - 85 454 thousand euro. TEN-T Program funds - 17 091 thousand euro.
The project is going to be completed until 30 June 2013.
