Swedish Quay

I Project description

Investment will be implemented at the Eastern Port and will consist in the reconstruction of the Swedish Quay including the roadway and railway system together with the over-ground and underground infrastructure. The investment is expected to increase the potential of handling the bulk cargo. The investment is part of the TEN-T network.

II Aim of the project

Upon the completion of the investment Gdynia will be equipped with the well developed and modern port infrastructure to handle bulk cargo such as fodder products, or aggregates for construction of domestic roads. Implementation of the project will contribute to the increase of share of the environmentally friendly marine transportation in the overall transportation of cargo. The development of this area of port will increase the competitiveness of the Polish sea ports within the Baltic Sea region, which is expected to grow in terms of annual growth (2-3%) of global transportation of goods by sea. Bearing in mind the interest of the marine environment and the surroundings of the port, 2-3 ship sewage collection points will be established under the planned project of "Reconstruction of Swedish Quay at the Port of Gdynia", which will constitute contribution of the Port of Gdynia in reducing the sewage discharge from ships into the Baltic Sea. Realization of the planned project will also provide facilities enabling supply of electricity to the ships at the quay in the future – it will mean making an effort to support the actions aiming at limiting emission of pollutants into the atmosphere.

III EU Funding

The application for EU funding of the project under the 2007-2013 Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment, Priority Axis VII “Environment-friendly Transportation", Measure 7.2. Development of Maritime Transport - has been submitted.

IV Basic Specifications

Reconstruction of the Swedish Quay - the above-water and underwater parts concerning the section of 430 m, and the increase of the structural depth to -15.5 m. In the current phase of reconstruction the dredged material is planned to be removed from the bottom to achieve the depth of -13.5 m. Part of the works at the Danish Quay (the quay adjacent to Swedish Quay) will consist in the underwater reconstruction to form new bank slopes at the bottom.

V Activities within the project implementation

Design works will be completed at the beginning of 2012, whereas the reconstruction of infrastructure will begin in mid 2012. Putting of the entire investment into operation is planned at the end of 2013.
