Having regained, in 1918, its independence - so very much desired after 150 years of partitions - Poland was still lacking access to the sea. Under the Treaty of Versailles a small portion of the Baltic coast was granted to Poland.    ORP Błyskawica was a Grom-class destroyer serving in the Polish Navy during World War II, currently preserved as a museum ship in Gdynia. It is the only ship of the Polish Navy awarded with the Virtuti Militari medal, as well as oldest preserved destroyer in world.
